You may well ask: "Why pass by Pelops' land,
And seek to lay this task of yours on Athens?"
In fairness, I would make this answer. Sparta
Is fierce; her ways are artful; and the others
Are small and weak. Yours is the only city
With strength enough to undertake the task:
She sees what misery is and has for leader,
In you, a good and youthful shepherd; ruin
Has come to many states for lack of such command.
