The copy editor and the artist may be reading your story at the same time, but they will be reading it in quite different ways. The copy editor is slowly, carefully going over your manuscript with an eye to its accuracy and style. The artist, on the other hand, is skimming through the carbon copy, watching only for the pictures your words form in his mind. He is alert to your description of the characters — how they would look and move and sound. He is also watching for the especially exciting and important moments in the story and scribbling down fast notes so that later he can select the scenes he wants to illustrate.
